The New Dark Age

Writing in the February 2002 issue of Chronicles, Thomas Fleming says that we are already being ruled by the barbarians:

So the question is not whether American civilization will collapse but when – and what are we prepared to do about it. Until we are willing to give up the fiction that we are living in a decadent period of the Roman Empire – say, the reigns of Nero and Caligula – we can never appreciate our situation. The barbarians rule our world just as surely as they ruled Rome during the sixth century.

Up until a few years ago, I thought that Bubba might have a little fight left in him; but Bubba watches the WWF and the Playboy Channel, and his wife is on Prozac.

  1. Ya know, outside of Lucifer’s futile conspiracy against the Godhead and humanity, I don’t get too jazzed over conspiracy theories. But like you, I look around and all I can see is the “Oafing” of the U.S. Ward Cleaver has been replaced by Peter Griffin and June has been usurped by Peggy Bundy. What passes for entertainment today is at its best, banal and at its worst thoroughly debasing. Hotwing and six-packs seem to have become the modern analog of Bread and Circuses.

One only has to watch Mike Judge’s film “Idiocracy” to see this play out to its end. Unknown to most, Judge is a conservative and his works like Idiocracy and Beavis and Butthead were made more as a warning of just where we’re headed barring intervention.

  2. Joel,

Australia isn’t far off, either. Bread and circuses indeed!! God help us all.

Blessings from the Great South Land.

  3. Interesting comment by Thomas Fleming. I had never really considered the fact that the US has moved past the point of decadence and is now being ruled by the barbarians, but I believe he is correct.
